6 - 8 inches low
I went to the range today with my new Springfield Mil Spec .45 and every shot was centered but 6 - 8 inches low. I was using Magtech 230 gr FMJ and a weaver stance. This is my first 1911, am I doing something wrong?

Re: 6 - 8 inches low
how far were you away from the target? 45's are heavy, they will drop fast.

Re: 6 - 8 inches low
Maybe, but it's hard to say.
Have someone else shoot it and see if the shots impact in the same place on the target. If they do, then it's the gun and not you.Last edited by Karys; January 31st, 2009 at 07:13 PM.

That's the easiest way to find out.
If it proves to be you it may be you're mashing the trigger causing the shots to strike low. If you have no experience shooting a SA (revolver or auto) and you're used to shooting Glocks or a DAO semi-auto this may be the problem.
You can also find this out by dry firing (double check it's unloaded and dry fire in a safe direction) or doing a ball and dummy exercise.

Re: 6 - 8 inches low
I was shooting at 7-10 yards. I don't think it is my grip or stance. I started the day shooting with my HS2000. I shot some of my best groupings. I used the same grip and stance with the 1911.

Re: 6 - 8 inches low
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the HS2000/XD is made to shoot with a 6 o'clock hold - if you use the same hold with your 1911 this could be the reason for shooting low. (assuming that the 1911 is POI sights)
They're just like small children, Its an EGO thing, " well if I can't have it this way, then I want it this way"..WAAAAAH - BrownBear (speaking of liberals)

Re: 6 - 8 inches low
XD is Polymer, 1911 is steel... You might have a firmer grip from shooting the XD (Which helps control perceived recoil)...
The fact that the 1911 is steel, in theory you should have a little less firm grip simply because the weight of the 1911 will absorb a good amount of recoil... So you "Might" be griping too hard on the low end of the pistol...
Might I suggest you try shooting it with this grip (Two Fingers), just to see if you were over griping... (I have done this myself and found it useful)

Thanks, I will look into the over gripping.

Re: 6 - 8 inches low
I would just try to use a sandbag or even just rest the gun against the bench and shoot a couple rounds. This takes your grip out of the picture. Just squeeze the trigger super slow and let the gun surprise you.
