Default OK to Switch Between Lead Cast and FMJ?

I have a S&W 642 (.38 snubbie revolver) and I shoot some lead cast rounds sometimes, and then I shoot some FMJ. Is it OK to switch between the two? Should I be cleaning the barrel between switching back and forth?

Depends on how much lead is deposited in the barrel. If you are shooting hard-cast bullets, then switching to FMJ's is no problem and may help clean minor fouling (bullet-lube, unburnt powder) from the barrel. If you are shooting soft lead bullets and there is significant fouling, you can build significant pressure and possibly a Ka-Boom. Velocity, as well as hardness, is a factor in the amount of leading.
