Default I have a question for you guys?

I had a gas stove in my basement that I unhooked and need to throw out, can I stick it out for trash day and if not where can I take it to dump legally? I don't care how much it will cost I just need it tossed legally.I live in South Philadelphia, PA.

I'd try it, all they can do is not take it. If they don't take it to a scrap yard.

Agreed on the scrap yard. Most places that take iron will take the whole thing as 'dirty tin' which gets you 2 - 3 cents / pound depending on prices (last time I was there was last summer... ymmv). Great way to get a few bucks when getting rid of water heaters / washers / dryers / furnaces / shelving / any old thing. If it has an electric motor in it, jimmy that out first and give it to them separately... a lot of places will give you a much better price for an electric motor (45 cents / pound when I did it).

Get out your yellow pages and look up 'scrap metal'. There will probably be a bunch of ads... these guys were raking in dough the last few years. Drive in, throw the stuff up on the scale, collect money. Or just lug it out to the street on trash day, if you're area is like mine, someone in a "junk"-filled pickup will stop by to collect it and take it to the scrap yard for you before the garbagemen ever get there.

(And of course, if you tear the thing down to its elemental pieces yourself, you can get the most for it).

Also, check with your locality. They sometimes offer one day (sometimes more than one) where you can either kick anything out to the curb or you take to a centralized location.

In my current area, I believe they show May 16 as Spring clean-up day. I don't have anything large so did not ask but I assume this is what is meant for this day.

South Philly? Put it on the front porch, and make it look like you're planning to keep it...someone will take it soon enough....

Just to make sure it gets taken, put a sign on it that reads "$25 or best offer". Gone by morning

Be safe (and watch for "broken windows").

Right at the bottom of the Platt Bridge there is a scrap yard that has a gigantic shredder. I see guys in there all the time. It eats everything!
