    Default Gun Cleaning Alternative

When I clean guns, I usually start with bore cleaner and/or CLP, and then rinse with Birchwood-Casey Gun Scrub before lubricating. This works fine, except that Gun Scrub cost more than fine wine.

Is there a cheaper alternative? Brake cleaner? Would brake cleaner damage plastic or painted parts (like the fluorescent paint on the sight?

I've used non-chlorinated brake cleaner and haven't seen any damage to plastic parts. Can't speak for the painted sight though.

I switched over to Frog Lube years ago. It's non toxic , bio degradable and non flammable. It cuts down on cleanings, protects against rust and is easier to clean firearm in general. My wife doesn't get pissed off any more about stinking the house up. It smells like a pack of chewing gum.I buy the 8 oz.jar of paste. It lasts a long time because half of it doesn't go to waste.

CLP is already a Cleaner/Lubricant/Protectant (CLP). I don't use anything else. I scrub with CLP and then remove the residue with a hot water (kitchen sink, don't tell the wife) rinse. The metal dries in no time with the hot water rinse. I then coat all metal surfaces with the same CLP and wipe off the excess.

I have a fair amount of CLP that I use when I need something liquid, but my go-to is Eezox which is also a Clean/Lube/Protect formula. Been using it for years without any malfunction or wear that I have noticed.

Does your gun not look clean after using the CLP? As long as my gun parts look clean and my patches are coming out clean I don't see the need to use anything else.

How much CLP are you using? It doesn't take much CLP to clean a gun. I've been using the same little can for the past 13 years.

I use CLP a lot. It's not the best at cleaning but it does lube and preserve well. Most of the time it does a plenty good enough job for me.

Ed's Red also came up on another site I posted this to. After I got over the shock of your avatar and signature I Googled it. Thanks for the tip.
