Duck hunting shotguns are more dangerous than an "modern sporting rifle", but it's "essential" that you have a "modern sporting rifle" to defend your family. This doesn't add up.

A semiautomatic rifle like an AR is an effective tool for self defense because it's good for putting multiple rounds on target that can disable or kill a human. That is a good thing when the rifle is used to protect innocent lives. It's a bad thing when the rifle is used to take innocent lives. The rifle is the same and doesn't know the difference.

The rifle is the same but the circumstances of use are not. A suicidal killer will work around whatever restrictions you place on him. Ban ARs, he'll use something else. He can choose a soft target and plan accordingly, and he doesn't care about getting out alive.

For self defense, the citizen or police officer probably won't get to choose the circumstances, and the attackers certainly won't be unarmed elementary school kids. Prohibiting effective weapons for self defense will reduce our ability to stop a threat and get out alive.
