Recovering Stolen Gun
Approximately 2 years ago I had my .45 Ruger stolen from my house. I bought it brand new and had a permit to carry. Everything legit. 3 months later it turned up in an arrest and they said they needed it for evidence at the hearing. Shortly after I moved to Wash Dc for work and got a call from a PA state policeman saying he wanted to get my gun back to me. Somehow I lost touch and I'm now back in PA and would really like my gun back. Can someone give me some advice on the best way to track it down? I don't have the serial number. I'd appreciate any advice from someone who knows more about this than me.
Thanks

Re: Recovering Stolen Gun
This should be good... Why did you not act on this when the officer contacted you?
Look to the One Who is wearing what should have been your scars...

Probably because he was living in DC if I read that right, and for most purposes, that would have been a no-no before Heller.

They will only hold onto it for so long... You can try calling the barracks you lived in and see what they say, they might still have it. But after 2 years, it's doubtful they still have it...

Re: Recovering Stolen Gun
I would start by trying to get in touch with the place you purchased it. You may be able to get the serial #. Once you have that contact the state police and hope they still have it. Most likely it is long gone but you can still try.

There's a lesson here to all:
Keep all the paperwork for your guns and record the serial numbers somewhere...even in several different places.

Re: Recovering Stolen Gun
I would not want it back if it were mine.
I would have already collected from my insurance company, replaced the firearm, and would have no idea the condition of the recovered firearm [it could beat to hell or used in several crimes that may come back to haunt me down the line].
Upon recovery I believe that I would have to pay back the insurance company and sell the recovered firearm.Last edited by MOUNTAINORACLE; May 5th, 2011 at 04:37 AM.

Re: Recovering Stolen Gun
Even if the gun wasn't destroyed yet, one may find in recovering a stolen gun that a court order must be signed for its release.
