    Default scary moment

i was metal detecting the appalachian trail by the bake oven knob today and hit a coin read on the metal detector. started digging in the packed ground and smashed into a live 9 mm round. would have been interesting day if i would have hit the primer.

Actually it probably wouldn't have been nearly as bad as you thought it could be. That's because the explosion of gun powder isn't being contained. It's allowed to expand in all directions. It would be loud, but may not even break skin if it hit you.

The primer would likely be more dangerous than the actual round.

When I was about 10 I wanted to get the primer out of a 30-30 cartridge so I could make a little cannon out of it. I took the slug out, dumped the powder, took it down in the basement and put a propane torch on it and ran and hid behind the freezer. All of me except my foot.

The primer "came out" at a very high rate of speed and smashed my ankle, penetrated and cut the artery. I ran up 3 flights of stairs to where mom was and spurted blood all over the place up and down. I had to have the primer extracted and walked with crutches for a couple of weeks.

    Yes, primers are dangerous.
