Default Charged Fee when I dropped off a Form 1

I dropped off my Form 1 yesterday for the local Sheriff. I was told by a friend that did the same thing earlier this year that you just drop off the papers at the main desk and wait for a phone call. I did just this, and fortunatly the lady behind the counter opened the envelope and rushed out to get me before I went down the elevator. She told me that you can no longer just drop off the forms and that I needed to go to the office that issues the LTCF's around the corner. I walked in and the gentleman instantly aknowledged me even though he was on the phone. As soon as he was off, he came over and asked "Dropping off some Form 4's" I said that they were Form 1's and he looked them over and said "No problem, five dollars and your driver's license", which I of course had no problem with. He said that I would get them back in the mail in just a couple of days..which is a lot sooner than the old week or so that it took to get the phone call to pick them up...and I don't have to go into the city another time and pay for parking. All in all, it is more convenient for me.

I am sure that it is to cover the cost of postage and such. I was just curious if anyone else has been charged when dropping off forms, or was told that they would receive them in the mail.

I've never been charged for forms, or been told i'll get them in the mail.

i have been charged for fingerprinting, which annoyed me, as *I* did it perfectly after the cop doing it messed up 2 cards...I've been FP enough for NFA and security clearances that I can roll perfect prints on toilet paper if i had to

I had my prints done at the local PSP barracks...Free, perfect and printed via computer right on my FBI cards.

It all makes "cents" now...I dropped the forms off yesterday around 1:00pm and there was a certified signature required card in my mailbox today at 10:00 am. Less than a 24 hour turn around time. That is just awesome in my book, and explains the charge for the certified mail.

Now if the rest of the process would just be that fast..........

$5 is pretty reasonable if you ask me. It'll cover their time to look over the papers, do probably a PICS on you and to sign off.

I think theres a couple or more Sheriffs that charge a small fee for sign offs in the state. ....One I heard of charges $10-20.

Oh, I agree that $5 is resonable...especially seeing as the cost of the certified mail was $5.32.

For that fast of a turn around AND certified mail, I'd say that is absolutely worth it. A small fee is perfectly acceptable to me if they are going to go out of their way to get you taken care of.* I hope my LTCF application goes as smoothly.

I call and figure out when the sheriff is there, walk and b/s for about 15 or 20 min on stupid stuff, he signs my forms and i leave. I park near the prison for free parking.

I really really like our sheriff.

I just give my Township Police Chief a call, stop by the police station, and he signs them on the spot.
Also no fee, and he doesn't "keep a copy".

Just the way it should be.
