Seems something like twenty cars have been hit by bullets in they last few days. They were holding a bullet recovered from a vehicle and it looked like a .22 LR. I just saw the report on Fox News. There were shots of damage done and it looked like in most cases there were dents and paint damage but no metal body work being penetrated. Lots of side windows were shattered also.

A 22 would penetrate the doors under ~200 yards. Seems like someone shooting up in the air and the bullets dropped and hit the cars to me. Possibly a 22 short?

Highway 680 Sniper Victims Climb To 25; CHP Closing In

FREMONT, Calif. -- The California Highway Patrol bolstered the number of officers patrolling Highway 680 Wednesday along a stretch of East Bay roadway where a pellet-gun sniper has fired on at least 25 drivers.

CHP Sgt. Trent Cross said investigators were following up on several leads and believed the agency was closing in on the shooter.

“Our investigators have received some good information as well as gathered evidence in the area – we are very comfortable in the direction our investigation is heading,” he said. “So we strongly believe we will bring these shootings to a close soon.”

The CHP spokesman said as word of the shootings has spread; more potential victims have come forward.

“We have a team of investigators – both uniformed and undercover – who are working day and night trying to bring these shootings to a close,” Cross said. “Yesterday we received more than 15 calls into Dublin CHP office says they have been possible victims.”

Cross said investigators have also found dead pigeons with pellets in them in the area of the shooting.

“We do believe there may be a connection there,” he told KTVU.

Cross said BBs or pellets have been fired at moving vehicles on Highway 680 between the Mission Boulevard and Washington Boulevard exits on multiple occasions over the last month.

There have been reports of property damage, but no one has been seriously injured in the shootings.

"We don't want it to escalate into a situation to where someone else is hurt or injured due to someone else being irresponsible or foolish," Cross said.

On Saturday, at least five vehicles were shot on the highway between 11:40 p.m. and 11:45 p.m., CHP Sgt. Rick Luciano said.

Luciano said the shots were likely BBs and no one was seriously injured.

A silver Range Rover was one of the vehicles that was struck that night. Its front passenger window was shattered. The driver asked KTVU not to identity him because of safety concerns. He said his wife and 10-year-old son were riding in the vehicle.

"We heard what sounded like a gunshot or a small explosion, and about a millisecond later the passenger window of the car blew in all over my wife and across the car on to me," he said. "We realized that somebody had either shot the car or thrown a rock at it."

He said that after he got home, he found two metal fragments that resembled bullets. One was on the passenger seat floor, the other in the center divider cup holder. Cross said the CHP was not releasing where the shots are coming from because it could compromise the investigation.

The CHP is asking anyone whose vehicle has been hit or who suspects their vehicle may have been hit to call them at (925) 828-0466 or (800) TELL-CHP.

ok so this just brought me back to the thread about the kid wanting to carry a bb gun for self defense..... i guess this person doesnt realize that even though it is a "gun", sooner or later he is going to have to face off with someone who is pissed off because of being pelted and get shot himself..

Everything I have heard on this , including video of one of the projectiles clearly points to a BB/Pellet gun . The video clearly showed a BB embedded in a piece of safety glass .

I noticed the same thing when I saw the pics on the news this morning. They showed the glass with the BB in it. Not a pellet. A copper BB. The same that I use in my BB gun.

I think it's insulting to real snipers to call whoever the hell this is, a sniper. Heck I can fix it. Just let the Marine Scout/Snipers loose to get him. They'll find him and fix the issue.
