I'm all for missile defense and they we should do whatever is needed to put a system in place.

But a ballistic missile attack is way down the list of my worries. If Russia decided to launch a full scale attack there is no system in the world that would ever defense us. It would be game over. BTW, from subs the times goes from 33 minutes to about 7. And the first strike would most likely come from cruise missiles so a SDI type system would be useless

If Iran or NK wanted to launch a ballistic missile we would know about it in enough time. These things are not like taking out a gun and shooting somebody. Chances are that our sats would know at the very start of the fueling process. If they are smart they would fire from a cargo ship close to our shore and detonate it in the atmosphere for maximum EMP effect. Iran has been reported to have extensively practiced firing missiles from ships.

Hell, if they just want the EMP effect, send it into space and then back down. 30,000 feet above ground is supposed to be high enough to cover the whole country with an EMP. I think they're lying about that one, though. Realistically it should be more like 120,000 feet off the ground.
