Default "You can't buy that ammo, its only for Handguns"

Not really sure if this story will matter to most of you due to age, but ill tell it anyway.

Sunday a friend and I made plans to go out and shoot his Hi-Point .45 carbine he picked up very cheap. We went to the local Walmart to grab a few hundred rounds to shoot around at his house(200+ acre farm where we setup a small range).

We got to walmart and were amazed to see that they had .22 lr in stock so we both planned on picking up our limits on that as its much cheaper to shoot after we run out of .45acp. We each decided to pick up a 250 rd box of .45acp as well. While he was checking to see if they had any other ammo he was low on, I had the register worker start pulling my .22 and .45 off the shelf so I could check out.

As he's ringing up the .22 the register asked if it was for pistol or rifle to which I replied rifle. Next he moved to the .45 and I figured it would be the same question but it was not. It asked if I was 21 and to show my ID(I'm a month shy of 21, and my friends a few months behind me.), I told the sales person that it was for use in the Hi-point .45 carbine and he replied that it was impossible to shoot handgun ammo out of any rifle. He then stated that the walmart system could not be overridden on ammo purchases even if it was possible I was shooting pistol ammo out of a rifle. He advised that I most likely needed .45 long colt for the rifle because .45acp ammo is ONLY made for handguns.

I was kind of in a hurry to get home for dinner so I didn't try to argue the point with him as I had a feeling he would not get it anyway. I bought my .22 brick and waited for my friend to check out.

Is this a typical response to buying ammo that can be possibly shot in a handgun but is also produced for rifles?

I have heard of this before, but to my knowledge all they have to ask is if you are shooting it through a rifle and if you say yes they should sell it to you..

But i think this guy was letting his own stupidity dictate what he tells you.

Its kind of the same situation I was in years ago (before their post Newtown nonsense) when I was contemplating buying a Remington 597 at Dick's that had a threaded barrel. When I was looking at it the guy told me it was illegal to remove the thread cap because it was unlawful to attach anything to it. You should have seen the look of horror on his face when I told him I wanted a threaded barrel so I could attach a suppressor to it..

At least you got the .22. My brother tired to get some for me once and they wouldn't give it to him because it could also be used in a handgun, even though he said it was for rifle.

Granted this was a couple of years ago so I figured "oh well".

If that were the case now, I'd be pissed haha

Good job not jumping down the guy's throat.

Cashiers at any retail store get all sort of ridiculous stuff put on them by corporate. The guy is probably not a firearms guy, regardless of being stationed in sporting goods. The system comes up as pistol ammo, he sticks with it to not risk his job.

You say you're a month shy of 21. Soon it won't be a problem anyways.

Yea, at least they let me get the .22. Makes no sense to me at all as both rounds are handgun and rifle rounds. The sales person was friendly enough but obviously did not know enough about firearms to be working that department. This goes with my general philosophy of Don't open your mouth in a conversational dispute, unless you are 1000% sure you are correct. Otherwise you look pretty idiotic to everyone else.

Just standing next to an ammo case makes them experts on all things gun related. Its called Osmotic Moronic pressure, the smartness just oozes in through their skin.
Go see if they had an article in one of the Gun Rags on Hipoint Carbines and show him that yes he was an asshole.
Or better yet google on your smart phone and show him a Hipoint carbine.

I did offer to show it on my droid, he wasn't interested in the slightest.
