Mauser M98 Sporter...?
Happy Wednesday all,
Need help with a rifle that I have come across and have adopted as a project gun (although it is not that bad).
The gun is marked as a M98, 22-250, and I believe the S/N is 104. Although I am not a Mauser scholar,
I do believe that this being an original 22-250 would be incorrect. Modified? Maybe you can tell me what is the case...
The rifle is in pieces at the moment so I dont have an assembled photo.
Thanks much,
bkmeis

Re: Mauser M98 Sporter...?
From what you have posted, it looks like a WW I vintage Model 98 that was sporterized and rebarrelled at some time. A view of the whole barrel would be helpful, but there appears to be a lot of taper in what I can see, not a military appearance. Obviously drilled and tapped for a scope as well.

Re: Mauser M98 Sporter...?
Somebody took a $800 army rifle and turned into a groundhog rifle. It was very common years ago. Nobody gave a crap about "old military junk". Now original milsurp stuff brings big money. It is what it is. A Mauser action with a 22/250 barrel. Depending on the work/barrel it could be a tack driver or a turd.

Re: Mauser M98 Sporter...?
When I was a a kid, sporterizing was the thing to do. Take a $50-75 milsurp rilfle and turn it into a "real" gun with scope and all for much less than a Winchester or Remington would cost. My how things have changed!
There were magazine stories galore on which action to use and most agreed that the mauser action was one of the best.
