backstop suggestions
Ive got 5 acres up here in upper bucks..directly behind me there is nothing but thick brush and woods that no one SHOULD be in (posted private property).
To my left there are two neighbors. One is 50 yards from my property line and her house is in line with my house. The second neighbor is is also to my left, about 200 yards to my left and 200 yards behind my house.
As a result I think I am in a fairly good situation to use my backyard for pistol shooting, but am trying to figure out what to use as a backstop.
Suggestions? Will mostly be shooting .22, .45. and .44 calibers in a handgun.

Re: backstop suggestions
I would recommend an earthen berm if possible. Or plywood, .45 rounds can easily penetrate a 2x10 but plywood would stop them especially if its more than one layer.
I would also recommend speaking to your neighbors in advance and letting them know, and to ask them the simple courtesy of calling you if it ever became an issue- like if they were having a gathering, etc and didn't want to be subjected to the noise for a particular day/time.

Have you checked with your local township ordinances? I would recommend to start there to make sure you won't be in violation of noise ordinances or specific firearms discharge ordinances. The township I live in has both in action preventing me from being able to do so, even if I had a property like yours.

Re: backstop suggestions
I think I am ok on noise ords, as I hear others in the area doing the same thing (someone is rocking a full auto somewhere close by almost every weekend), but I'll double check.
Freesoul..earthenberm is at the top of my list, but that cant happen till next year..
Did think about plywood...what thickness would you suggest? 1/2" maybe?
Was also thinking about hay bales? Was thinking of a backstop made of those. I was going to use a total of eight, maybe four high, two deep, maybe with 1/2" behind it.Last edited by glocke12; August 12th, 2011 at 01:05 PM.

I built an earth berm in my backyard. You can see it in this video:
Its basically a 5 foot tall mound of dirt that was compressed by repeatedly driving up and down on it with a quad. Then I covered it with about 1' of mulch. I have NEVER had a ricochet from the berm. I only shoot .22lr.
BTW that's not me in the video but it's a member here.
