what are some of the basic things I could get with a C&R licsense that are semi-auto and pretty good pistol and rifle wise?

Pistols: P38, P1, CZ82, Yugo M57, Polish P64 are all great weapons. I have all of them minus the P1, which is the P38 with an aluminum frame. The CZ82 makes a nice carry weapon too.

Rifles: You can't beat an M1 Garand or M1 Carbine.
