Default Thinking about getting an AK

I have been thinking about getting an AK now while I still can.

I stopped at Dunham's and was looking at Wasr-10s. They want $350 for a basic that takes high cap mags and has standard wood furniture. They also had 10 round versions for $250.

I was thinking of getting the $350 one. Is there anything I need to look for to avoid on the Wasr? i know it is the cheapest version but I'm not looking to spend a lot.

Front sight cant and wobbly magazines. Not to offend but the wasr's are the bottom of the AK barrel. Not that they are horrible but just don't expect too much from it.

    Here is some reading:

There was another thread that answered much of what you're asking here, here and here.

WASR's are excilent. yes, their quality can vary significantly from rifle to rifle, however if you have a good eye and can find one thats kept in good condition, you will love it.

Main thing to worry about is canted front sights(meaning the front sight block is off center), the mags you can always shave down a lil with a file if they dont fit well(i havent come across any were they fit lose, however there are some were the sides need to be filed down a touch to fit easily.

If you have fired some different ak's you will find the accuracy stays about the same from a higher end rifle to a lower end one. The only difference is in the "quality" and "craftmanship" in which it was made.

Think? Hell, just do it!! Get 'em while you still can. A WASR is a fine example of a low dollar AK and is the most common out there right now, I have/had a bunch of them. If that's what you can afford and it makes you smile then go for it!! If you can afford more $$ and want a nicer one go that route....none of the AKs are actually nice though (and I love 'em). They are utilitarian, highly effective military weapons without any frills.

There are a few articles on fixing this. Front sight or gas block misalignment isn't a deal breaker. (detection - correction)

Bear in mind for most, buying an AK based on appearance is about as exciting as buying a stapler based on color.
