NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The American Civil Liberties Union has asked public school officials in Tennessee to stop blocking students' access to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Web sites on school computers.

The organization said in a release Wednesday said as many as 80 percent of public school districts, including Knox County and Metro Nashville schools, may be restricting access to non-sexual sites that offer educational and political information about issues such as gay marriage or groups such as the Human Rights Campaign.


The letter asks the districts and schools who use filtering software provided by Education Networks of America to stop blocking sites designated as "LGBT" or the ACLU will file a lawsuit.

Tennessee state law only requires schools to use filtering software to restrict information that is obscene or harmful to minors.

Funny how they won't be the champions for anything 2nd amendment. I am not much of and ACLU fan. I wonder if firearms related sites, like the NRA are block as being harmful? It's full of political information, but the ACLU will never tackle that one.

I say block most of it. heck, pull the internet out of the school and make the kids look it up in a book. If you want computers in class, a locked down intranet that would be appropriate for most companies would be the best choice, and you would have to unlock or give a person permission to even surf the web.

Well, here the government schools where telling the kids that some speech would be banned because it was homosexual or transgender related. The government is the one saying some speech was okay. Not a good practice for those who value a free society.

Yep, they beyond suck when it comes to the 2nd Amendment. I won't join them because of their stance, but they do awesome work on First Amendment issues.

Agreed. But if you offer the internet for research, entertainment, etc., we can't have the government saying some opinions are okay and others are not.

In a public school, funded with my tax money, I don't want my children to have access to or be confronted with that kind of material. Children at any age are very impressionable. That type of material is something that should be discussed at home between the child and the parent. There is no good reason to have access to that at school. If for some reason we can no longer have God in the class room than we can certainly extend that to "alternate lifestyles". This will be one more step towards children having full rights which will only lead to parents having less rights.

Seem to me that people who don't like what the ACLU is trying to do here are bringing their own personal bias into it.

Free and equal means that if you are going to make non sexual hetero-biased material available (which is certainly is), you need to do the same for the other side as well.

Dont just sound off about freedom as long as it conforms to your own personal beliefs, because thats not freedom.

If you want to claim to stand on the side of freedom, then fucking DO it...or, are you actually NOT in favor of it?
