Hearing protection of choice
I'm wondering what everyone prefers to use as hearing protection while at the range. I use an over-the-ear "static" (non-powered) headset type with a 33 dB reduction, works great for noise reduction, but cancels any possibility of a conversation between rounds, and can sometimes interfere with cheek weld to the stock.
I'm wondering if the first problem can be resolved with one of those electronic headsets that cancel loud (>85 dB, I think) noises, but scales back during quieter times. Do these things work?
I also carry a bottle of foamy ear plugs for any guests I might bring with me (or if someone else forgets theirs).Last edited by Dosbomber; February 16th, 2010 at 08:31 PM.

Re: Hearing protection of choice
I use the static over the ears headset. The little foam ones are a pain in the ass--If someone talks to you--you have to take them out--talk--squish them up and put them in again and repeat as needed. Over the ear ones take them off and put them on---easier!!

I use the foam in ear plugs but also have a set of the dB canceling headsets. The canceling headsets are real nice, but everyone needs to be using them in order to have conversations otherwise you will talk too quietly and no one can hear you.

I also use the static over the ear type. I think I bought them from SportsmansGuide They arent round and smooth looking they look like something from an 80s music video. I look goofy wearing them but I already have hearing lose from my job so I'll use them until I have some extra money but I probably stick with the over the ear static ones.

Plugs + static muffs. I don't trust the muffs to deliver full protection when I wedge safety glasses between them and my head. Also, if you're on a busy range (especially indoors) you are exposed to everything that is being shot, some of which is uber-loud.

i picked electronic, but only because I could only pick one. for rifle shooting its either foam or silicone inside the ear plugs, since the muffs tend to interfere with the cheek rest.

I have a set of caldwell electronic ear muffs....love them...... they amplify low volume sounds but block out gunshots....and are extremely affordable

Static.
I don't see the need for extra protection beyond the affordable (cheap )
headsets. I do however shoot outside. I could see an inside range being a different story.FUCK BIDEN
