There are a lot of good safes out there. Some better than others, you get what you pay for. For our college student here, for an economical safe see if you can scrounge up an old ATM. While not fireproof, and not as secure as a real safe (mine have 4 bolts) they can be had cheap. The trick is actually finding one. Contact local ATM service companies and ask, worst they can do is say no. I was hoping to tap into a supply of them a couple of years back but the guy left the company to do something else. Most of them are smallish but my tall one holds rifles and shotguns fine, the smaller is where I keep ammo and loaded handguns. Look to offer $75 for something 42" high. What you see as an ATM is a covering, the safe is under all that stuff and it isn't sheet metal.

Depends on what you are looking for?

Do you want fire and water?

    I recommend Cannon or Liberty.

Somethings to look for are the locking mechanisms, the fireproofing, the water proofing, and the customization.

If you are located in Philadelphia I would look at Liberty Safes.

If you are in a budget then Stack On. But there is a huge difference between stack on and Liberty or Cannon.

I bought an American Eagle by Cannon Safe at Dunham's about 10 years ago.

Nice size, holds 20 rifles and shotguns with no problem and has movable storage, which gives you some adjustment to your particular needs. I think I paid about $300-400 at the time. I think it weighs about 700-800 pounds, because I was concerned about loading it on my John Deere Gator which has a capacity (load and driver) of 900 pounds, to bring it around to the back of the house. And I'm just a tad north of several hundred pounds.

I looked at a lot of safes. This one doesn't have a particularly high fire rating, I don't recall what it is, but I wasn't too interested in that anyway, that's why I have insurance.

Security was the main concern, solid piece of gear, I bolted it to the concrete floor in the furnace room. Yeah, given a torch, crowbars and enough time, a couple of yahoos could get it open, but that's the case with any safe.

I suppose you could talk yourself into some of these $2,000 + safes, but it was my opinion that unless you have some seriously high valued property, the guys that buy those are the same guys that buy designer label stuff.

    And that ain't me.

Saw a Liberty safe at Sam's club. Not bad for the price , saw it at Valley Forge show yesterday for $200 more and a smaller safe.

I would imagine a old coke machine gutted out would also work, they are heavy, and last place to look for guns.

I have heard this many times. I have even seen a few nice examples of them. But If I was a crook and broke into a house and saw a soda machine just sitting there, it would peak my interest.
