    Default Springfield Model 1898

My son is looking to sell a Springfield Model 1898 built in 1899 and all original (not cut down, original stock and full length barrel). I have no idea what it might be worth or the best way to sell it. We're in Berks County.

How is the condition? Could you post some good close up pictures of cartouches etc. as well as some pictures of the entire gun? Condition is everything when determining the value of a gun

Google that endlessly until you find enough examples for sale to draw some kind of average price. Then consider selling on AuctionArms, Armslist, other national boards. You'll hit a broader market that way.

Adding to the internet search route advice. Look at what the SELLING price was for any similar guns. Asking prices are worthless and frequently highly inflated.

    Next-
Go to a bookstore and peruse the gun section. Look up a current edition of "Blue Book of Gun Values", or "Standard Catalog of Military Firearms", or "Gun Trader's Guide". Familiarize yourself with the condition rating system inside. Note any special variations that might apply and proceed accordingly.

Dealers start and end discussions with printed values in these. The usual trick is to low ball you by showing the guide that shows the lowest value, while showing you the highest guide value when selling (a lot like car dealers).

An 1898 Krag is a fairly collectable firearm. You shouldn't have too much trouble getting it sold at a fair price.

Thanks for the help! I'll do some research and post some pics of the rifle.

Without much more info, the average range is about $800 to $1200 in original uncut condition.

A particularly nice specimen will obviously be worth more, a ratty one less.
Cartouches and other markings make a difference as does if it was ever sanded, srcews buggered, etc...

Try posting some pics or a link to a photobucket slideshow, etc...
