    Default Bipod for AR

I came across one of those cheap plastic bipods sitting in a bin at a junk sale, and couldn't resist it for a buck. It's one of those springy military styles that clamp onto the barrel (which can't be good).

Is this thing even worth trying on an AR 16"? Will the plastic melt after, say a full magload on semiauto, and will the fact that it barrel mounts vs forend mount preclude it's very purpose of enhancing accuracy? Will it be more damaging to the gun as it's more rigid than a soft-surface prop?

I never considered adding a bipod to a carbine, but it's more convenient to carry to the range than sandbags, and, like I said, for a buck, what the hey?

    Thanks

It's exactly this, but pretty good gauge plastic:

MHO you'd be better off with sand bags resting on the forearm.

The better type of bipod mount would be place on a free float handguard. As you noted this would eliminate contact with the barrel.

FWIW here is a pic of a Harris BP mounted on a Rock River free float handguard.
