    Default Anyone use gun locks?

Here's a dumb question. do you release the slide on a semi-auto pistol after you've locked the gun with a cable lock? It seems like if i leave the chamber open i will put a strain on the recoil spring, but if i release the slide the cable might damage the gun. which is better?

I do own gun locks, but not to lock up my guns

Compressing a sping will not hurt it. A spring will wear out from use not from being under pressure. I would leave the slide open and you'll be fine

Gun locks? I have a bag full of them. Need any?

You will not hurt the recoil spring by storing the firearm in the slidelock position.

Gun locks are silly, I know, and I also know that I have enough guns to get a gun safe but i've been moving so frequently lately that I can't get one just yet. I just broke the news to my parents that I have some guns and my Dad wasn't very happy. I figure it will go over better with them if they come to my apartment in June and see my guns hidden away carefully and "safely" locked. It's more about just public relations.

Thanks for your advice. I just don't want the lock to damage my guns in any way.

You're much more likely to damage the gun if you release the spring with a lock in place than leaving it open.

There is nothing wrong with locking your guns up. I don't lock mine up yet, because my daughter is only 8 mo old. But next on my list is a safe... Whatever makes you feel comfortable.

    +1.

it does not hurt a spring to keep it compressed at all. springs wear out from being cycled...not from staying in either a compressed or uncompressed state.

Gun locks are evil little contraptions! I keep my guns in a safe, but no individual locks for them!

Don't you use them to shoot at? use them like a whirly gig target.

You must have guessed I don't use gun locks. I have a safe.

I use cable gun locks all the time. I use them to lock the release lever closed in my trailer coupler, lock my helmet on my motorcycle when it's parked, lock the hub to the frame on my lawn tractor, lock my removeable tow bar to my jeep, lock my bikes to the carrier. Why wouldn't someone want to use them?
