Window cleaner down the barrel of your AK?
Have you ever heard that you should dump windex or wd-40, etc... down the barrel of your AK right after shooting it until you can get home to clean it?
I heard it is done after shooting corrosive ammo, but how beneficial would it really be?

ive heard of it for the use with corrosive ammo, it helps neutralize the salts and and other stuff in the primers or powder on older ammo.
Guns don't kill people, it's mostly the bullets.

Re: Window cleaner down the barrel of your AK?
I don't do it with my AKs because I don't use corrosive ammo BUT I do do it with my M44s and my 91/30 ... and yes as Rovert pointed out it stops the chemical reaction from corrosive primers, enough that you don't have to worry about cleaning the barrel until you get home (and actually I usually wait until that evening)

We don't do this with our AK's, but we also don't use corrosive ammo in them either. We do do this with one of our rifles, first thing when we get back to the house, but I forget with one it is.
hehehehe DC beat me to it.

Thanks! Now that I know it will help neutralize the corrosive primers, what product would be the best choice for doing this?
My AK ammo says it's non corrosive on the box, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to try this anyway.

Re: Window cleaner down the barrel of your AK?
imho...
if you ever put WD-40 anywhere on any gun, you should clean it off as soon as possible.
when WD-40 dries, it leaves a varnish behind. with the possible exception of wooden furniture, you probably don't actually want to varnish your gun.

Re: Window cleaner down the barrel of your AK?
Windex has a touch of ammonia in it...the ammonia is what neutralizes the corrosive salts in the surp ammo primers. I only use it on the Mosin after I shoot some surp ammo. I then run a few clean patches and then a battery of Hoppes #9 patches. Finally, I finish up with a few Weapon Shield soaked patches. A clean bore is a happy bore!

I'm now armed with clear information... always a good thing. No WD-40, and if I shoot surplus ammo, I'll bring along some Windex. Thanks!
