    Default couple ar questions

i was looking at doing a rifle, but then i shot my gf's dad's ar..and i am kinda hooked. So i've been looking at them and i have a few questions.

What is the deal with the different size lowers? I know that there is a difference with the 5.56 and 7.62, but after that, does size matter? I've seen like medium and large or something at midway i think.

Also, what other calibers can you configure an ar for? I have been looking at the 6.5 grendel and like that, but doesn't look like you can get them (unless bought in a complete kit from andersen arms? (not sure of brand)

If i'd get a large lower, could i get a complete upper for x caliber, and interchange it with a complete upper of y caliber?

    Thanks a lot

I have no idea what you are talking about? All .223 /5.56 AR's use the same lower. The only exception is like you stated - the 308 (which is not a real "AR") uses a different lower so you can fit the mags in the mag well.

The caliber choices for an AR - .223 / 5.56 lower are pretty much endless. Quick off the top of my head:

    9mm
    .22
    .45
    6.8
    6.5
    7.62x39

There are a bunch more that others will chime in on but all you need to do is switch out the upper for the caliber you want to shoot that day - the sky is the limit - well, your wallet too.

A '.308 AR' can't get any any more AR than ArmaLite Rifles [AR10] http://www.armalite.com/Categories.a...0-49488ec48776

Armalite actually came out with the AR10 before the AR15 [hence the numbers]

the AR-10 is an American 7.62 mm battle rifle developed by Eugene Stoner in the late 1950s at ArmaLite, then a division of the Fairchild Aircraft Corporation. The rifle had some innovative features at the time of its introduction (1956); it was over 1 lb (0.45 kg) lighter than most other infantry rifles, it was significantly easier to control in automatic fire, was more accurate in semi-auto mode, and arguably handled better than any other weapon of the period. The unique features of the AR-10 would eventually be developed into the U.S. Army's M16. Over its production life, the original AR-10 was built in relatively small numbers, with fewer than 10,000 rifles assembled.

The Difference between .223 and 5.56 is one is an inch measurement and one is Metric, the .223" is a civilian load and the 5.56mm is Military they have almost the same properties, the 5.56 has slightly higher pressures. the 5.56 barrel will shoot both, but putting 5.56 in a barrel marked .223 could be a bad thing.

If God didn't intend us to have guns why would he have given us a trigger finger?

like, if i get the lower for the 223 or 5.56, will that lower work with all the ones you mentioned
    9mm
    .22
    .45
    6.8
    6.5

    minus the 7.62

can you purchase the 6.5 upper from outside manufactures other than alexander arms (in a complete packag)

    minus the 7.62x51 (.308)
Yes plus a ton more. I bolded and added a little bit to clear things up with the 7.62 round.

    This I'm not sure about.

I think you might need the MGI magwell lower to shoot .45. Need to check that yourself.

Those and a magazine. You might be able to get a .223 magazine to work, but probably not fully loaded.
