Actually its not silly at all , snipers have used this technique for well over 200 years now.
in fact during the seige of Stalingrad the German high command sent Germany's best sniper out to kill Vasilly Zaitsev, he used this technique , but in the end Zaitsev killed him using a similar technique, see the classic sniper movie "Enemy at the Gates"
