New to Gun Ownership and Gun Laws
1. Long story short, my brother in law who lives in MD needed to give me his handgun (Colt 1911) to hold for him - he's on probation for something not related to the handgun (meaning, he legally owned it, registered, etc...and it was not used in a crime).
Can he just give it to me, and what do I need to do with it as far as registering, etc....?
2. My uncle gave me a Japanese rifle that my grandfather brought back with him from WWII. Complete with 14" bayonette. Again, can he just give it to me, and what do I need to do with it as far as registering, etc....?
3. I'd like to take my B-I-L's .45 with me when I go shooting with my (other) uncle in MD. What is involved in transporting the .45 across the state line? Or the Japanese rifle, for that matter? Anything special I need or need to do?
I'm thinking I should take a beginner's course....anyone know one or offer one in the Dallastown/York County area?
Thanks everyone, I'm real happy to have found this site!

Re: New to Gun Ownership and Gun Laws
welcome to PAFOA.
i am close to dallastown, and can help you out if you need.
regarding the pistol: it is not legal for him to give it to you without an FFL interaction. you would need to transfer it through a maryland FFL to a penna FFL and then to you. have him stash it with the uncle, instead. but then, depending on Md law, it may need to be transferred by an FFL, ayway.
regarding the rifle: if the grantor is in penna, he can give it to you. if he is in Md, he has to transfer it to a penna FFL, who can transfer it to you.
if you need an FFL, the best i know of closeby is Stubbygear, Eric Staub, on west market street just west of york.

Re: New to Gun Ownership and Gun Laws
There is no registration in Pa.
As a resident of another state Fed law requires he send or deliver it to an FFL in Pa. (the recipients state). You can then fill out the fed and Pa forms, get a background check and take the handgun home upon successful completion of same. FFL will chrge you a fee for this "transfer" service.
If you are both Pa. residents there is no paperwork required.
If your uncle is not a Pa. resident the rifle will need to be sent or delivered to an FFL (in either state in this case, IE:long gun vs handgun) for transfer to you.
You will have to refer to MD law on that one. SOrry, I can't help there.

Re: New to Gun Ownership and Gun Laws
There is no requirement in Fed or Pa. law to utilize a FFL on the senders end. So unless MD law explicitly requires FFL involvement for outbound transfer (I dunno) then it can be shipped (common carrier) or delivered in person directly to a FFL in the recipients state.
Either way it is often easier to have an FFL ship the handgun since they can send through USPS which is cheaper and easier than using common carrier as required by law for non FFL's, most of which require overnight services be used for handguns due to their internal policies._________________________________________

Stubby Gear still open? Just tried to call the Phone # on the website, "disconnected or not in service." I filled out the "Contact" form...hopefully they'll call back...
Any one else local? How about at the Freedom Armory, anyone there?

Re: New to Gun Ownership and Gun Laws
freedom is very high on transfers and generally overpriced. they are also known for bad attitude. i live close to them, and only go occasionally to look at the consignment rack.
