Backyard Plinking?
I'm in Millcreek Township and wondering if my boys and I can shoot my 10/22 in my backyard (with a proper backstop). I reviewed the Millcreek ordinances and can't find anything against it. From what I understand, if there's no ordinance, I should be good. Anyone know for sure?

I couldn't find anything on the township page either. I would just say expect to have the neighbors call the police. Without being too specific, what part of Millcreek are we talking about?

Re: Backyard Plinking?
Yeah, I'm kinda guessing one of the neighbors might call the police. I'm in Belle Valley. My backyard runs to the woods. The woods run at least 100yds deep. If I'm sitting on my back porch shooting toward the woods, no neighbors would be able to see us. That is, they cant see the shooting location, but might catch us at the target location. My firewood stack would be my backstop. Guess I'll give it a try and see what happens.

I could be off base but I'm pretty sure there is some kind of law that prevents you from firing a solid projectile. That would leave you with shotguns only in millcreek.

Option b is put a suppressor on the 10/22 and shoot when and where you want

A call to the twp supervisors, or Millcreek police, might prevent a lot of trouble.
You could join one of the ranges and go shoot there.
Gem city isn't too far, and you can shoot outdoors free (with membership), almost any time you want to.
Keystone isn't too far, and you can shoot .22 rifle there.

Re: Backyard Plinking?
pretty much every law related to firearms and their use is state preempted, so fuck local ordinances. all you have to worry about is noise complaints, which shouldnt be an issue with a .22.

Re: Backyard Plinking?
I'm a member at gem city, and plan to check out Keystone soon. However, for teaching my kids, I'd prefer my back yard. Among other things, I wouldn't have to worry about talking to them over the sound of other's shooting.
I'll have to make a call to the township supervisors. If they say no, I'll ask where I can find it written and post back.

Re: Backyard Plinking?
I sent out an email to the township supervisors. I explained that I was a township resident, and that I was researching the ordinances of nearby townships which pertain to the discharge of firearms. I asked if Millcreek has any ordinances that prohibit the discharge of a firearm and if so, where I could find the ordinance(s).
@XACEX - Please correct me if I'm wrong, but it's my understanding that PA's preemption law protects my right to ownership, possession, transfer and transportation. Local ordinances still rule on discharge.Last edited by OPiNiCUS; February 23rd, 2012 at 06:10 PM.
