Mythbusters-blowing finger off due to improper revolver hold
Hey saw an interesting myth busters show on improper holding of a revolver blowing off a finger. Apparently it can happen! When a revolver discharges, gasses go out perpendicular to the barrel at the gap between the cylinder and entrance to the barrel. If you improperly hold the pistol and have a finger near this gap, it can do severe damage to the finger. They used chicken to demonstrate it and the chicken looked pretty badly damaged from it. I did not see the full piece so I missed the information on the exact pistol type.
It scared me because I have been experimenting with better two handed grip on S&W 642 and my left hand has been getting closer to that area!

Here's a fun page to click WELL AFTER lunch. It's a bit gory, but it's a true story.

Those were gory pics indeed. That is also an example of the worst grip I have ever seen.

Yeah, expelled gases from any weapon can do serious damage.
Just ask Curmudgeon. Injured by what was suspected to be the blast of gas. (I believe)

Thankfully he was expected to fully recover. Scary shit though"Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both." Benjamin Franklin

Re: Mythbusters-blowing finger off due to improper revolver hold
i make it a habit at the range, to instruct people to hold a revolver by the grip. specially the S&W 500 when they use the hot loads. its just common sense. watch a round get fired, and look at all the gas and flame that comes out the side of the chamber. hell even 2 feet away on the side, i get burned on occasion by flying GSR.
Guns don't kill people, it's mostly the bullets.

So uh, why do people who have no training in any capacity and lack common sense buy guns? No wonder people think guns are so dangerous to handle.

Yet another reason to promote the need for professional training.

Re: Mythbusters-blowing finger off due to improper revolver hold
Same can be said for other things like cars. Doesn't take much training or common sense to drive a car. And it's every bit as dangerous.
So why do they? Guns are cool. Guns offer protection. And it's their right to do.
I think what seems like common sense to us, isn't so for most others. If they were never taught to respect guns, and only know what they see in movies, guns don't seem all that dangerous.
