1911 range question
has anyone here tried shooting their .45 acp 1911's out to 100 yards?
if so what kind of accuracy did you see with what type of rounds?

Re: 1911 range question
depends on the maker and the barrel, some will guarantee certain MOA. If you buy a Wlison CQB for example they will guarantee 1' groups at 25 yards.
Sometimes I like to shoot the 8' gong on our 100yard range with my 1911. I shoot a Springfield TRP. 45ACP drops like a rock, but if I hold the top of the gong at the base of my front sight I can hit it so long as i do my part with whatever ammo I ram in it.

Re: 1911 range question
With proper holdover, the right shooter with the right 1911, it can be done all day long... There are guys that can bang steel past 200 yds. They use the ejection port as a way of measuring holdover at long distances... I have a chart somewhere showing illustrations of it.
It in no way is easy to do though...

Re: 1911 range question
Yep. There are lots of stories about guys plinking at 100 yards or more with .45s. The "trick", as noted, is to learn the hold over.

Re: 1911 range question
There was a 100 yard 1911 postal match over on the Cast Boolits forum last year. A number of folks posted groups in the 12 - 18 inch range.
Me? I had difficulty keeping them on the earth.

Re: 1911 range question
There was an article in the recent Guns and Ammo about shooting long range with a 9mm 1911.

Re: 1911 range question
Man, the farthest I've shot mine is 50 yrds. I can keep about an 18 in group off hand.

Re: 1911 range question
Shooting my Kimber from a benchrest last year, I hit an 8" paper plate maybe 1 time per 8 shot magazine at 100 yards using WWB. (At one point I went through 3 magazines without a hit.) After switching ammo to a mixture of Hornady and Speer, I could hit paper 3-4 times per magazine. I'll be the first to admit that I am definitely not proficient at that distance with a handgun, but better quality ammo made a noticeable difference.
