Default Don't Call it a Weapon

I'm just as guilty of this as about everyone else. But I was told me to "never refer to your handgun as a weapon". It is a "tool" that you carry around with you. It is a pistol. A handgun. A 9mm. But never a WEAPON.

Prosecutor: So sir, do you always walk around town carrying a WEAPON. Why would you need a WEAPON. Isn't this something you use to hurt people.

I know, it is a play on words. And yes, we are carrying it for that terrible time that we may need a WEAPON. But if you think about it. It does make sense. Call it a firearm. But don't call it a weapon. It isn't a weapon till you have to use it as such.

What are your thoughts on this?

"The rifle is the weapon of democracy. If guns are outlawed, only the government will have guns. Only the police, the secret police, the military. The hired servants of our rulers. Only the government-and a few outlaws. I intend to be among the outlaws." (Edward Abbey, "The Right to Arms," Abbey's Road [New York, 1979])
I have my rifle. Do you?

Yeah, you're right. A weapon can be anything...a lamp, a ball bat...even a pen could be a weapon. A weapon is only a weapon when the user chooses it to be!

However, I don't get too excited when people use the term. The aunties will find any reason to bash us anyways...so I think the point is kinda moot!

In the classes I teach(NRA), we always refer to them as firearms or guns. A weapon has only one purpose or use and that is to cause harm to another person. A firearm has many uses, including sport shooting and hunting.

Soldiers carry weapons. Police carry weapons. I carry a firearm.

The NRA started that whole weapon/firearm shtick. I've been corrected several times by NRA RSO's by referring to a firearm as a weapon. IMHO, I think only conscientious "firearm" owners call them "firearms", the rest of the world refers to them as "weapons".If I'm not mistaken, the written law classifies firearms as "weapons".Hawk,

    It's called a friggin' MAGAZINE!!!

    Ooops! Wrong thread.

I use whatever term is appropriate for what I am talking about at that moment.

I generally use the word firearm, even when "gun" is faster to type.
The media has done a fine job of demonizing that word, don't you think?

Everything is an object or tool. A screwdriver, sodacan, a pointed stick or a gun. It is only a weapon when it is used in a defense or offense. Until that time it is a tool.
