    Default Lever action .22

I've been cleaning up my grandfather's Marlin 39a from the mid 50's and after a good wipe down to clear some of the rust out and a replacement of the firing pin (I'm guessing snapped off due to dry firing some time in the past 30 years since it was last used) it's a dream to shoot. I was shooting tin can @ about 75 yards with the iron sights and the thing was dead on. He's letting me hold on to it for now but eventually I'll have to give it back to him. When that happens I'll have to get my hands on one of my own since this one is so fun and cheap to shoot.

I'd like to find a used 39a if possible, but if I was going the new route any suggestions on who makes the best lever .22? I'm not looking to put out more than about $350.

I've heard they've got a lot of plastic and aluminum parts. I haven't had my hands on one though. I'll have to check one out next time I'm in Cabelas.

I don't know about aluminum, but the one my neighbod had didn't have any plastic that I remember. I do remember that the action was silky smooth.

It seemed like a solid little gun.

    Henry's are sweet!
I had a Henry for about a year and really enjoyed it. I think they're a hell of a value, even considering the aluminum and plastic (barrel bands are plastic).
However, last Spring there was a 39A for sale through PAFOA's classified. I bought that rifle and sold the Henry.
If you want a lever action .22 and don't want to wait, go for the Henry 001 (cheapest model). Just keep an eye out for a 39A. You'll find one sooner or later...or your Grand Dad might decide to give you his.

The Henrys are nice rifles for the money, but, they ain't a Marlin 39 by any stretch of the imagination. Look for a used 39 rather than a new Henry.

I bought the Mrs. a Winchester 9422 about 10 years ago, it's *excellent* quality, all steel & wood, smooth as glass. Unfortunately, Winchester stopped production on the 9422 a few years ago, but used examples are available. Here's one without bids on Gun Broker right now for $395:

i have a marlin model 39A " golden mountie" this is the shortend version with the straight grip instead of the pistol grip like the new ones and i wouldn't trade it for anything, great shooting gun. the action is nice and smooth, only thing i wish it had was the open sights instead it has a weaver 4x scope on it. it was my grandfathers and he passed it on to me before he passed away in 1999

Don't be afraid of the Henry rifles - great guns for the price, action smoother than a baby's butt. Probably find a used 39A for the price of a new Henry.

Base Hoo1 has aluminum and steel recvr assblys - like almost all .22s these days - and with plastic barrel bands, wood is American Walnut vs. Ruger mystery wood.

Higher end Henry more steel, more bux.

Thanks for the input guys. It seems that for the time being the Marlin will stay in my possession since my grandparents went back home and it's till in my basement. I'll give the Henry's a look the next time in Cabelas.
