Without seeing anything else, I would guess a Colt Police Positive or the Police Positive Special. The CPP was chambered in .38 Colt and the CPPS was chambered in .38 Special. Any other markings (anywhere)? The more info you can give the easier it would be too identify. Even the s/n, give all the numbers except the last 3 or 4, that would help also. If it is real old, it could it be a .38 Colt (same as a .38 S&W), which makes it a Police Positive. The grips are aftermarket, the originals were walnut with the Rampaging (Rampant?) Colt medallion.

Well, we now know it is a Colt Army Special, which should be a .38 Special round. You can see if a .38 Spec will fit. If not, then it will be a .38 Colt (aka .38 S&W). It looks like it's in good shape and a lot of people like to take them out to plink. If you want more info just Google "Colt Army Special".

The S&W I can't comment because I don't have access to my Standard Book of Smith & Wessons (I'm at work). I'll try to investigate when I get home this evening. Same thing, any and all identifying marks help.

Thanks by chance would you know a year of production on the colt? As far as the S&W goes its obviously OLD I know my pap has muskets and flintlock pistols as well from the civil war. He probably has 5 original long guns all used by our family and I spotted a few pistols as well, all in a dusty attic.

See if you can find the s/n on the Colt. It should be located somewhere on the frame, possibly even under the grips. You don't have to give the full number, leave off the last 3 or 4. From that, an approximate date can be figured out. It could be anywhere from 1900's-1930's. They changed the name in the late 20's or early 30's IIRC.
