Check out the yellow pages for a tailor. It might cost a bit, but you'll get it done in a professional manner and money well spent on a high quality item is never rued, whereas if some non-pro does it, you may not be happy.

Cavarms and Castle Rock Tactical both make exceptional discreet cases. I know you have what you wanted planned but they are both great cases. Having converted a hardshell guitar case in the past, I am currently looking to adapt a lacrosse bag to this purpose.

ETA: If you know anyone in the Military ask if they know a Rigger. They will know how to sew and will have the know-how, experience and equipment for sewing heavy duty materials. Get in touch with Eggroll with EGL and he can either help you or recommend someone who can.
