Very, very enlightening article on guns and the Civil Rights movement
From the pages of the left-liberal magazine The Nation-- shedding light on the little-discussed topic of the role of armed self-defense during the "non-violent" Civil Rights struggle in the South. Ever wonder how, with widespread Klan terror and collaborating police departments, Martin Luther King, Jr. was not assassinated sooner? Or how more assassinations of prominent "non-violent" civil rights activists in the South were avoided? It's because when these people were at rallies, marches, making speeches, several armed members of the "Deacons for Defense" were usually around. Lots more good stuff here, read on: http://www.thenation.com/doc/20040705/marqusee

Just one bump. This is a good article and is a good resource for dealing with the common appeals to King's legacy of non-violence from the pacifist Liberal left when discussing gun issues.

Thanks for the link.
Another way to get liberals behind guns is to remind them that, if they believe gun owners (and conservatives more broadly) are nuts, then why are they leaving themselves disarmed?
Then we will truly be a polite society.
