Default How do you sand Rubber?

How do you "sand" Rubber? I have a Rossi revolver with Rubber grips, the grips fit me well and the Gun points well but there is a sharp ridge at at back of the grip where both grip panels meet , i would like to smooth it down but am not sure how you deal with rubber.

    Any suggestions anybody?

I've blended recoil pads with regular old sandpaper. I think I was using 800 automotive paper from Autozone...but, it may have been more aggressive than that in the earlier stages.

Depends on how hard the rubber is. Some of them will sand ok, some will just get gummy. Try some sand paper or a dremel and go from there. carving with a razor blade may be an option for removing the ridge. Wire wheel on a dremel may work to smooth it over also.

I remember reading about shop that would freeze rubber or plastic parts prior to machining them so they would be harder and cut better. That may be something to try.

Great, Yes the rubber on the Rossi grip is very hard , so it would probably sand easier, and i do have a Dremel kit.

    Thanks, Nyman

That little drum sander that fits the Dremel tool would be your best bet, I would think.
If the rubber is anything like a recoil pad ( which i think it is) you'll need sometype of sandpaper AND speed.
Sounds like Dremel time to me.

I'll add this: Tape up the area you don't want the sandpaper to hit. Sand easy at first, you can't un-sand.

Yes, i'll tape off the area i dont want to sand.
Its just a sharp ridge that i really want to sand down , should be good going for the Dremel.
