Default "Red Vs. Blue" states Labeling

I dont recall ever discussing on any boards how these labels came about.

From what I recall, 2 elections ago the color designations were REVERSED. Blue States were Republican and Democratic states were RED.
Before the last election it appears as if the "left" found those labels to be "politically incorrect" and objected to their being labeled accurately as "red" or "commie"....leftist leaning states.

It appears that the mass media was quick to switch the states colors and indeed promoted to excess that henceforth Rebulicans would be red and the Dems a less "exposing" Red labeling.
    Do I recall correctly?
if you ever see my post edited...its most likely for speling :D

As far back as I can remember the labels were this way (but my confidence is not high). I thought the idea was that the map would be white until the red and blue would take over (nice TV graphic). I recall at the time thinking that it would be funny if the Dems were the "Reds", which makes me conclude that they were blue.
Of course now that the Republicans under Bush II have increased the size of government more than any other president, you could say they have put the country in the Red, so maybe now the colors do match.

I found this shirt at a gun show a few years ago.
I don't know the history of the colors, whether they ever switched or not.
The map sort of speaks for itself, the heavily populated areas carried the state.

IF you break down the country by county, it's mostly red. This same battle has been going on since this nation was formed. Urban vs rural. Rural wants a hands off government, urban wants a hand out government.

I'm pretty sure for Reagan it was switched.
