S&W 642 / S&W 442
The S&W642 and S&W442 are the same gun despite minor differences.
642: Frame Material/Cylinder Material = Aluminum Alloy/Stainless Steel
Finish = Matte Silver
442: Frame Material/Cylinder Material = Aluminum Alloy/Carbon steel
Finish = Blue
Is there a difference in durability between the Stainless Steel Cylinder vs. the Carbon Steel Cylinder?
Is one finish better than the other?
I have the 442 on layaway, I like the look of the black finish, but I will switch it to the 642 if it is more durable.Μολών λαβέ

Re: S&W 642 / S&W 442
If you plan on carrying it IWB, in a bellyband, etc, close to the body, the stainless cylinder is going to be more resistant to body moisture than the blue. I'm not sure though that the alloy frame is as forgiving as the stainless cylinder. If you're diligent about wiping it down each day though, you should be OK in either case.
Someone just showed me a small alloy-framed, stainless slide auto the other day, a somewhat rare gun at that, carried in the pocket. There were rusty looking spots on the frame and it really looked like shit.
I think the stainless gun would be a little more forgiving but you still have to keep after it. I personally would get the finish that pleases me the most and just plan on keeping it clean.

Re: S&W 642 / S&W 442
I carry a 442 everywhere I go in a pocket holser. After a while I could see the finish was wearing just a bit. I cant tell if it is going to wear right off as of right now. But it has me wishing I would have just gotten the 642.

Re: S&W 642 / S&W 442
I've got a 642 that I've carried just about every weekday and sometimes on the weekend for the last 1 1/2 years. It mostly rides in an ankle holster, or just in my jacket pocket.
My son has a 442 that he's carried for almost a year as well. It gets carried mostly in his pocket - un holstered.
Both guns have over 1000 rounds through them (without any problems)
The only big difference so far is in the turn line. The 442 stands out much more (the picture was taken when the 442 was new)
I do try to wipe down my 642 at least every other day with a silicone cloth, and I clean it weekly (even if I haven't shot it)
I'd pick the one that you like best, and take care of it.
These are great little guns that are worth the money!

Thanks everyone......
I think I will just stick with the 442 and keep it clean, I really like the black color to it..........
I just wanted to make sure there was no major difference between the two that I should be considering.........
Thanks

For durability, stainless gets my vote hands-down. For concealment, though, just remember that a "mirror" stainless finish will catch more notice if any part of it is exposed.

Actually the 642 is a matte finish. It has no shine.
