At least two shot at Los Angeles-area high school

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – At least two people were shot at a Los Angeles-area high school on Tuesday, and police took a young man into custody.

There was no immediate word on the condition of the victims at Gardena High School, which was locked down following the 10:40 a.m. incident, authorities said.

Live television images showed officers taking a young male dressed in black into custody, but it was not immediately clear if that individual was the shooting suspect.

Initial reports said there were as many as three people shot and that they may have been students.

A Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman said two victims were taken away by ambulance.

Gardena, a small town of about 60,000 people, lies just south of downtown Los Angeles.

The shooting there comes 10 days after a college dropout in Arizona opened fire with a semi-automatic pistol outside a Tucson shopping center, killing six people and wounding 13 others, including a congresswoman.

A high school in the San Diego suburb of La Mesa, California, was put on a security alert for four hours last Friday after police received a phone call from an anonymous

caller asking about a supposed shooting threat.

I don't think so. The first thing that always comes to mind when I see stories like this is that all those laws against minors possessing firearms in school zones really seem to be so damn effective.
