Default Going to surplus store tomorrow

What are some things I should get. From everything I can see, this store has quite a selection.

I'm starting my SHTF bag. I was thinking about getting an ALICE backpack or something like it.

    Stuff along the SHTF lines...

Well if you are paranoid (like me) or go camping a lot (like me) I usually like to pick up a case of MREs if they got them. Generally I only buy them if they are actual military MREs, got skunked by Civilian MREs in the past. They will have an date code on them something like "8241" meaning the 241 day (late august) of 2008. I would stay with 2008 up, about a three year life in normal conditions. Also check out the orange sticker on the case, if it is dark in the center avoid it.

Ammo cans are nice to have if you like to keep a decent supply of ammo on hand.

Its a candy store, for people whole like to be prepared. You can't go wrong. Well unless you buy a rocket and attach it to a car, you're on your own in that case.

    i suggest a:

    Bags/Packs

Good Pack that will stand up and hold everthing you want to pack.
    Camel Pack.
    Full First Aid Kit.

    Clothing
    Good pair of boots.
Boot socks both warm and cool weather
BDUs I wear the black paints for work and love them.
Sleeping bags (i have see at the Army Navy stories have been very nice.)
    Rain Gear

    Tools
    Tarp (for shelter )
    Knife
    GI shovel
    Leatherman Multi-tool
    compass, then get maps
    Fire starter
Mess Kit with fork and Spoon (could be useful if you come across other food)
    Flashlight / Batteries
    Weather Radio / Batteries

That on top of the MREs that Akross suggested and your Bug out Pack would have a good start. Remember there is no real need to do all that at once you can pick up all those things a few items a pay check and be a lot better off than most.

The Red is what you really should look for at a Surplus store the other times can be had other places just as easy and maybe cheaper.

Good stuff. It's only a matter of time before NineSeven shows up.

I carry, in addition to the above:
Cheap, used medium ALICE pack & frame.
Small handheld GPS w/ internal map
    Compact foods-store bought -- Tuna -- Chicken
    Trioxane fuel bars
Zippo W.W.II repro lighter (might be the same as the plain matte finish Zippo)
Ethyl alcohol & stove (when time & space permit)

Since I'm in a vehicle most of the day, I usually don't carry:
    Boots
    Socks
    BDUs

My policy is that if it goes into the field, it must be cheaply & easily replaced.

    Question:
I'm from the canteen generation. Do camelback bladders attach to ALICE frames, or does the hiker wear separate straps?
Gloria: "65 percent of the people murdered in the last 10 years were killed by hand guns"
Archie Bunker: "would it make you feel better, little girl, if they was pushed outta windows?"
