Stephen Gutowski said he was excited to exercise his rights for the first time since he moved to the D.C. area five years ago — so he grabbed his pistol and headed to the National Mall.

Gutowski, a reporter for the Capitol City Project who also hosts the webcast “Games & Guns,” has a concealed carry license in the state of Virginia, where he lives. That license wasn’t valid in the District of Columbia, however – until Saturday, when a U.S. District Court struck down the capitol’s ban on carrying handguns in public, ruling it unconstitutional. The ruling allows registered gun owners to carry handguns openly or concealed.

DC’s ban on “large capacity ammunition magazines” — magazines with over 10 rounds — is still in effect, as is the ban on assault weapons.

What is the point of carrying court papers? The police is not the judge. They are not going to read lengthy court rulings on the side of the road and pass judgment.

Eh, baby steps. Let's start small and warrm the idiot anti's there upto ppl carrying fairearms. Let's not run roughshod over this win with an OC TX type stunt and turn public opinion against us. We obviously are seeing some wins in the courtrooms, but we still need hearts and minds cos thats all the anti's have. So we need to fight fire with fire.

How is carrying concealed going to help in winning their hearts and minds? To them everything will look as it was. What's the difference between no one allowed to carry and someone hiding a firearm concealed? The perception is the same.

The only thing that can win them over would be for them to know a gun is there and to see for themselves that nothing bad happens. We don't need to be obnoxioud and in your face about it, but the guns need to be seen to affect a change in attitude.

While I agree, things like this are a good way to start. Show ppl that there's been a gun aroudn the whole time and nothing bad happened. To each their own, I'm not anti OC (provided you aren't being douchey about it). I just am praying we don't turn a good thing on its head.

Ok, maybe I reacted a little too bluntly, but most folks here don't post a youtube video of themselves walking around a PA street saying "Look, I'm carrying a concealed pistol."
