Default Glock 17 vs Smith & Wesson Sigma SW40VE

    first off...this is for real; I recently purchased 2 semiautos within 3 weeks of one another and now I am on the fence; I traded off a few handblasters that I wasn't using alot for a Glock 17 (9mm) w/ olive drab frame; next I made a mistake of stopping at Gander Mountain to browse & ended up leaving with a Smith & Wesson Sigma (.40 S&W) w/ stainless slide;

after shooting a few hundred rounds thru both, I like them both, but due to a cut back in overtime at work, I may have to let one go to stay ahead of the credit card bills; long term intended purpose was for range gun, home protection gun, and infrequent car defense gun

so which one would you keep & why?

I'd say, in general, keep the Glock. It's a rock solid pistol with a ton of after-market accessories available for it. It's forgiving as hell, and has an excellent reputation. All of that aside, 9mm is cheaper to shoot on a regular basis. It's also a good service/duty round. By way of disclosure, I own both a 19 and a 26, and have been very, very happy with them. I have not yet purchased a S&W, so I will leave advocacy for their horse in this race to someone with more knowledge.

glocks--and particularly the glock 17--have a (deserved) reputation for being the most reliable semiauto handgun ever made (not that there are not other reliable semiautos out there).

sigmas...well...let's just say they do not have that reputation.

for that reason, i would say keep the glock.

(also, i would say keep the 9mm over the .40s&w because 9mm ammo is much cheaper, so you will be able to afford to practice shooting more...which is extremely important.)

Given the intended usage that you listed, the choice would be easy for me.

    G17

    It's simply a better gun.

You can never have enough horsepower or ammunition.

Dump the Sigma, keep the glock. Glock has a much much higher resale value and they retain value much better

Sigma's are going for less then 350 (New)... and they hold very little value once they are used. Glock's will retain a LOT more value, getting a glock for under 400 is a STEAL and normally they only get that low if they are police trade ins or old versions.

They are also very likely to get bitch slapped if there is a future AWB, and you can get .22 conversion kits for them.

    dump the Sigma.
The first vehicles normally on the scene of a crime are ambulances and police cruisers. If you are armed you have a chance to decide who gets transported in which vehicle, if you are not armed then that decision is made for you.

Be prepared, because someone else already is and no one knows their intent except them.

i have, and love, a Sigma, in 9mm. i don't like Glocks, at all; i can't shoot them well, and they're uncomfortable to hold. that said, i'd keep the Glock, for the simple reason that 9mm is about 1/2 the cost of .40S&W, so you'll end up saving money on the Glock. also, the Sigma series guns have precious few accessories on the markt, while there's no shortage of Glock gear.

If you had a M&P, I would say stick with that, but in this case I agree with the statement that you should just keep the G17.

The Glock is a much better gun, and as others have pointed out, 9mm is much cheaper to shoot.

But, if you are really strapped for cash, you'll probably get more out of the Glock.
