Default My dad gave me his pistol

Considering how owning guns, hunting, and shooting tend to be long held family traditions that many hold with great respect here, I thought I would share a story that happened to me over the weekend. I am just getting into Cowboy Action Shooting and do not have all of the guns needed to participate yet. As such, I asked my dad if I could borrow his .357 Blackhawk to take to my first ever match. Of course he obliged and I went up over the weekend to pick it up.

When I stopped up to the house to pick up the pistol, he came out and handed it to me. As he handed it to me he reached in his shirt pocket and pulled out 6 .357 rounds and handed them to me. He said that these were the last 6 rounds of the first box of ammo he ever purchased for it (this pistol is at least 30 years older.. at least 6 years older than I am).. He handed them to me and said I want you to have this. You will have it eventually one day, but I'd rather you enjoyed it now while I'm still around. I thanked him and gave him a hug, and told him I loved him. I was extremely touched by the gesture.

I am very excited next year to invite him to one of the cowboy shoots, hopefully I don't suck to bad at it! I look forward to going hunting Saturday with him and cannot wait to pass on the traditions of hunting, shooting, etc.. to my two young ones when they get a little older. I hope that this story brings many fond memories of your dad/grand-dad passing on his things to you. What a great weekend !!

    *I love you Dad*

Enjoy it and pass it on.

The guns my father gave me will never be sold or given away.

Awesome! Are you gonna shoot the 6 rounds or save them?

My first gun was a Ruger Blackhawk, given to me by my grandfather. I'll never sell it.

Get a cowboy rig with a cartridge belt, and put the rounds in the belt. Or get something like this:

It is great to hear a story like this. You hear so few stories of fathers and sons bonding and letting each other know how much they love each other. Sounds like you have a great dad. Never stop telling him how much you love him and how much you respect him. The amount that we invest in our own fathers is the return that we might see from our sons.
