Default What is a good Spotting Scope

Hello everyone I just started shooting a my 22 long rifle more and my 30-06 a little more also and I just wanted to get some info on a cheap good spotting scope. I know those two don't go good in a sentence but I already have a really good one for pistol shoot but it is attached to my pistol box. I really don't feel like taking it off every time I go to shoot. any info would be appreciated.

Do you own a pair of binoculars? Those in combination with some "splatter" type targets might be all ya need.

Here's some listed at CTD. Cheap on up to ridiculously expensive. http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/fixed_bfeg.htm

Am I the only one who is confused when he said he has a spotting scope for his pistol shooting, but it is attached to his pistol box? The only way I can see someone using a spotting scope with a pistol is like siting in a .357 mag or .44 mag for hunting or something. It doesn't quite make sense to me.

    TCat,

Handgun target shooters use a scope in their pistol box. Really helps to see the target.

I have one of these . While it's not a Kowa or anything like that it does perform very well for the price and size. I use it out to 1000yards and on a day without mirage you can see a 22 hole at 200yd. I picked mine up from Scott at Libertyoptics.com

Thank I am going to check it out and TCat my dad was a big pistol shooter and he had a box made for him so the scope would bolt on it and when I moved I cant find the tripod for it and its a big hassle taking it on and off to make sure it fits just right.

    Jay,
Depending on how big the scope is you can get a mount and adapter to fit on the inside of the lid. Disassembles in no time if you want to use a tripod. Check out Champions Choice. They specialize in that kind of stuff.

That model uses a reflecting (Cassegrain-style) mirror design.

I've heard that this type of construction can occasionally have a rather finicky focus adjustment knob. In other words, it's hard to keep the plane of the focus to stay exactly at the target distance. This would be most noticeable as having to shift the focus back and forth to get it to stay in one place. Have you experienced any problems like this?

The second question would be that once you do get focus, can you zoom in and out without having to refocus?

Thank you Jeff, I really appreciate the explanation. I'm not a big pistol shooter, and I shoot at indoor ranges, so I always just pull the target back to me and check it out. I didn't even really think about alot of people not having that option. Sorry if it seemed like I was trying to flame or something, I just had no idea what a spotting scope for pistol shooting was for.
