AR-15 bull barrel replacement
hey dudes,
I have this:

(the 20") on my AR. I love it, it's accurate, but I want to get another lighter barrel to have some flexibility. I have a very expensive 20" free floating quad on it now, so I'd like to stay at 20". The bull barrel is nice, but not conducive to standing and shooting, it just gets too heavy. Any thoughts on some makers or companies that would provide the complete opposite of this? Lightweight, tactical, able to withstand long days at the range with 1000+ rounds per session? Cost isn't an issue as long as its within reason, I'd rather have quality.
P.S. What exactly does fluting add to performance, and why would someone want that?
Your pal,

Re: AR-15 bull barrel replacement
Fluting both lightens the barrel and creates additional surface area, which allows the barrel to cool down geometrically faster, thus reducing overheating as a factor affecting sustained accuracy.
I'd go with something chromed, even though that reduces accuracy by the tiniest of margins. Bushmaster has part A BBL-20A2A which you can look at here: http://www.bushmaster.com/products.asp?cat=7
I'd think twice about swapping your additional hardware back and forth, and go for a dedicated upper arrangement instead, so that you can go back and forth from precision to tactical with ease.

Re: AR-15 bull barrel replacement
Depends on your accuracy requirements. I've used the Model 1/Shaw lightweight pencil barrels with good results (1 moa).
But...if you want to shoot .5 moa or better then we start looking at Krieger and the like.
I prefer stainless.
