Default AR vs. EBR vs Carbine. Educate the Uneducated

Ok fellas, I looking at buying rifle.
    I am considering a M&P AR ($970),DPMS Panther lite 5.56($700), a Beretta CX4 ($800), or other options.
I have various pistols and an M1 Garand. But I'd like to have something that falls in between what I already have.

I shot the CX4 and like it. I like the fact it uses pistol rounds and is short.
I have some reservations about the punch of the pistol rounds and its ability to reach out and touch.

AR's on the other hand I have no knowledge of.

I know AR's can be EBRs also but what other EBR's or ER's can you folks recommend?
    Price range is $1000

    Thanks in advance

223/5.56 go with an AR, 7.62 go with an AK either way they are a hoot to shoot and will serve for the purpose you intend. on the other hand the carbine is a great rifle and in a pisatol caliber is fine to about 75yrds.

AR is just a generic name for the weapon platform. EBR is a term meaning Evil Black Rifle used sarcastically. Carbine refers to the gas system length on an AR.
AR15 gererically shoots .223/5.56 but you can also buy upper to shoot .22LR, 9mm, .45ACP, 5.45, 7.62, 6.5 Grendel, 6.8SPC, .50 Beowulf, 5.7 and the list goes on I am sure. you can even buy .308 AR10's or .50BMG AR's. personally if you're just getting in I'd recommend a 5.56 AR and from there you can get used to the platform, see what you like and need and mix and match to find what suits you. Read a lot, listen and then go do more research on your own to see what will suit your particular need and don't be afraid to ask questions, ask around to see if there are any of us in your area as I am sure most would be more than happy to go out and let you fingerf . . . er, fire their's to see what there is out there before buying your own.

You at least hafta get one AR lower to stick in the safe/locker. They're more available than they were a few months ago, and prices have dropped down to sane levels. My new favorite flavor is Spike's Tactical.

Since you've got the lower, you might as well buy an upper. . . and a lower parts kit. . . and a stock.

AKs are good too. Sig556 and FN SCAR are tempting. Pistol caliber carbines are fun. But I still think that an AR-15 should come first. If it doesn't quite work out the first time, you can always change it.

Ok thanks so far. Whats the difference in power between .223 and a 9mm?
I know the .223 has more punch but by how much?
Also about what range does a AR .223 have, 100yds,200, etc?
Oh I'm also only looking to spend $1000.
    So any recommendations are appreciated.
So far its between the CX4 and the M&P AR.

If the CX4 and an AR are on the list, I'd definitely consider an AK too. The ammo no more expensive than either 9mm or .223 to shoot. The mags are cheaper. The rifle is rugged and reliable. An AK has acceptable accuracy beyond ranges the CX4 could stop a threat at.

I really didn't consider the AK. Though I know it is a reliable and accurate platform. It just conjuers up images of terrorists, Soviets, and Commies etc..
Kinda like a swastika, it's just a symbol but.......................... I hope ya's don't Neg Rep me for that, It's just my weird self.
Though it is a hell of a rifle especially for the money.

We need YOUR definition of SHTF.

Seriously though, there aren't a lot of firearms that are the perfect choice for ALL roles.(Although the AR-15 covers a lot of them very well)

A 9mm carbine and a .223 rifle are as different as a hand grenade and a RPG.

What do you need it to do?

(Note that there isn't an military force on the planet that uses 9mm carbines as a main combat weapon)
I called to check my ZIP CODE!....DY-NO-MITE!!!
