Looking for competition in philadelphia area
Well, the last range i have found in the area that will let me shoot on the move and do the things i want has just changed all their rules since some people can't act responsibly. I need to keep my skills up and probably even improve them so competition seems to be the way to go. Certainly would love to meet some competition guys who could maybe teach me a thing or two about gun handling.
As for the type of competition, i'm only really interested in shooting my carry gun the way i carry it (maybe my rifle as well, but that is secondary). Open class guns in speed rigs don't interest me in the least. IDPA doesn't interest me as i don't care for things such as being to be told when and how to reload during a stage. I'd rather it be a test of skills and ingenuity than simply following a script. I've heard other types of competition may be more to my liking in this regard.
Alright locals, help me out.Last edited by MarcS; December 28th, 2007 at 08:42 AM.

I suspect nothing short of NTI will satisfy you.

Re: Looking for competition in philadelphia area
Well, with your criteria, things are tight.
LanghorneRodandGunClub.org runs an "Only Hits Count" action pistol like event every first Saturday of the month, from 8 AM (set up) though completion in a squaded manner. This coming match (Jan 5) will be indoor /low light, but most of them are outdoors, typically four stages, and designed to be "defensive" oriented.
The two course designers vie for control of each match...Jason scored "Only Hits Count" as targets are "defeated. Dick is more IDPA oriented, and tends to focus more on "a" zone hits.
On the last Saturday of each month, Freddie runs a "Practical Rifle" match, which focuses primarily on carbines and rifleman skills from 10 to 200 yards.
Other than that,
Classic Pistol (southampton) http://www.classicpistol.com/
runs an IDPA like indoor match, open squad (you shoot in order of arrival) from about 4-9PM on the third Tuesday of each month,
and Ready Aim Fire http://www.rafire.com/ does "real" IDPA on the second Monday (right off the PA turnpike just before New Jersey
Closer to you (chester) is Lower Providence Rod and Gun Club http://www.lowerprovidencerodandgunclub.com/
I know one of their pistol instructors, and I beleive he is President this year. They have a lot of events, though you may need to become a member and attend "Quailification" training to attend their Tuesday Knights....
Hope this helps.

Re: Looking for competition in philadelphia area
As i said, i'm not terribly interested in IDPA as i don't like the scenario scripting. I'm not interested in practicing other peoples shitty tactics, i'd rather use my own.
LPRGC is on my shit list for being unreasonable to the point of absurdity with their on sight training requirement.
You're probably right. I just want to find something that's tactically neutral, just a skills fest without having to worry about getting penalized because i think reloads with retention are idiotic. "Here's the scenario, solve it to the best of your ability" is what i want...hoping that NTI isn't the only place to find that.

Re: Looking for competition in philadelphia area
Shoot USPSA. You can shoot your carry gun using a belt holster. www.uspsa.org
Yes, there are rules you have to follow, but the major tenant is freestyle. In your area, you can go to NJ, but the high cap ban there may interfere with what you want to do. Some USPSA clubs over in that area are listed below:
New Jersey
CENTRAL JERSEY RIFLE & PISTOL CLUB
Located in Jackson, shoots on the second Sunday of the month.
NIK HABICHT P.O. Box 3748, Trenton, N.J. 08629, 609-984-9198
OLD BRIDGE RIFLE & PISTOL CLUB
Club located in Old Bridge, N.J.,
Shoots on the fourth Sunday of the month, Jan. thru Nov.
DAVID MARQUES 732-972-6163; or JIM NORMAN 908-431-1237.

shoots on the third Saturday, October through April.
George Jones.

Re: Looking for competition in philadelphia area
In that case, you may want to try USPSA. They have rather large stages that some may argue are rather unrealistic, but it does offer you an opportunity to shoot free style; that is, to solve the problem as you see fit provided you follow the few game rules there are and observe the safety rules.
http://www.uspsa.org is their web page.
topton fish and game has matches third sunday, guthsville has matches first sunday. Topton is about 20 min off the rte 663 exit off of the NE extension, and Guthsville is about 10 minutes off the Allentown rte 22/78 exit of the NE extension.

Re: Looking for competition in philadelphia area
You misunderstood me ted. I'm not concerned with "large stages that some may argue are rather unrealistic" because I'm not necessarily looking for realism. I'm looking to test my skill, not my tactics. The major issue I have with IDPA is that it is too constricting. I'm looking for something that gives me a problem to solve, even if that problem is just to knock down an absurd amount of pepper poppers in the shortest amount of time. That's it, i can do without it the game trying to interject it's own tactics because i like to bring my own. If USPSA offers that, I'll look into it.
