Good or Bad idea to carry handcuffs?
Well I asked this question on another thread that wasn't really about the issue at hand and didn't really get an answer.
Short and sweet my grandfather gave me a really sweet old leather handcuff holster from when he was in the military (i'm assuming WWII)
What are the legalities of OCing a firearm and handcuff holster? Would it be considered impersonating or something along those lines?
Also just common sense...would it just be a stupid idea? What if I need to hold an assailant until LEO arrive? To be honest if there is a post about citizens arrest that would be nice also.

Re: Good or Bad idea to carry handcuffs?
IANAL but Im pretty damn sure you CANNOT citizen arrest, or detain someone in any way.
No cuffs would not be impersonating. Your not claiming to be an officer, or trying to use the authority of one.
I spose you could wear em though

I wouldn't carry cuffs around. Just my opinion.

Re: Good or Bad idea to carry handcuffs?
Ah I didnt know a felony made a difference. So how do we know if its a felony unless its obvious like murder or the like?
The reason I said it wasnt legal is because I asked my brother, who asked his SGT who said very firmly NO.
AH my bad, I asked a cop about the law

Re: Good or Bad idea to carry handcuffs?
I have no problem asking cops about the law, if the know the law. But often times when I have talked to them about things like OC or LTCF violations, etc, even friends of mine can't cite or find where the law is. And most have heard it from another officer who knows it is the law. Or they knew it 10+ years ago. Cops don't know every law on the books. They can be a good resource, but like the internet, they are not always accurate.

Re: Good or Bad idea to carry handcuffs?
Know what constitutes a felony charge. I think most people would not get involved and not choose to make a citizens arrest.
For something like property damage it has to be reasonably believed that the damage is a certain dollar amount. For some reason 2,000.00 sticks in my mind but I could be wrong on that. ie, if you see someone beating a metal trashcan to pieces that is NOT going to be enough in value to constitute a felony. Now if they are running down the street busting car windows with a bat for the sheer hell of it then it's safe bet the damages are going to be in range. Make sense?

Re: Good or Bad idea to carry handcuffs?
Perfectly legal. Not considered impersonating at all. You can walk down the street in a full police uniform if you want.
I think it's galactically stupid. You have to always think about how your actions might play out in court if you have to use deadly force. Think about the worst anti-gun asshole prosecutor you can imagine. He's going to paint you as a vigilante wannabe on a power trip. That's without the cuffs. Why give him more ammo. How likely are you to need cuffs? I carry a gun because while the likelihood I will need it is tiny, the stakes are huge. I can't say the same thing about handcuffs.
Here's an idea - you find a friend or friends, establish a safe word and party down with the cuffs all you want.
