    Default .380 Reloading question

    Hello all
With the lack of .380 ACP ammo available, I visited a local shop and purchased a Dillon .380 ACP die set. I asked if I could use it in my RCBS single stage and was told, YES. On the way home I was thinking I didn’t remember seeing a shell holder in the box. When I called I was told by that same individual that Dillon doesn’t use shell holders and I would have to purchase a RCBS one. I just was on the phone with Cheaper Than Dirt and they said they don’t carry them. Can I use the #16 that I use for loading 9mm?

According to the rcbs chart, the 380 auto uses a #10 shell holder

I should have said I was told it was #10. I'm not familiar with the site you provided, what is your experience with them? Thanks

Dillon presses use a shell plate that rotates around:

The Dillon dies will work since Dillon dies tend to be longer than the others you should be ok by setting it to the depth you need.

If I try to put Lee dies on my Dillon press I can't crank the dies down low enough to do the job. The Lee dies are too short.

Dillon products are top notch - that's my experience with them.

I'm not too fond of Hornady dies, but Redding make some nice ones too.

I know that now, but I'm using a single stage. When I asked if I could use it on a RCBS single stage I was told yes. (Bad advice I quess, from a shop I have commented several times on this forum that I was pleased with). I'm just asking where I can get a #10 shell holder or should I return what I bought. Last time I spoke with RCBS (a while ago) the suggested I go through a retailer.

How much of a difference is there between a #10 & #16. I think I know the answer but would like confirmation.

    Thank again.

I didn't think the RCBS dies come with shell holders either. I have a set for .303 Brit and inside is just the dies.

I have seen RCBS parts at Gander Mtn.

I THINK I have seen shell holders in the blister packs for sale individually.

    I hope that helps.

I know its against "Total Safety" to not completly follow the instructions but I may give it a try with the #16. I'll wait 24 hours to see if someone can pound some sense into me.

380ACP uses the same holder as the 223Rem, RCBS #10, LEE #26 and so forth.

The .380 shellholder for .380 is the #4, the Lee 9mm shellholder is the #19 Using the 9 mm shellholder for .380 is a recipe for disaster. It is too big.

The dies will work, there was no bad advice about the dies. Lee is the only manufacturer that I know of that provides the shell holder with the dies.

All you need to do is get a .380 shell holder. A RCBS or a universal is $2-7 depending on store and manufacturer.
