    Default FAL Questions

    Was thinking about getting an AK. Now thinking that instead of a AK maybe a FAL.

    How accurate are they? Can scopes be easily mounted to them? How much do they cost and who are the decent importers.

    I do not own a FAL, but I am looking to buy one.
    Not sure how accurate they are, but mounting a scope should not be a problem.
    I think all you need is a rail to attach to the top of the rifle.

    You can check here (not sure whats in stock)
    http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/beta...ategory92.aspx

    But the nicest FAL's I have ever seen are from here. (SA58's & STG58's)

    Go here;

    http://www.falfiles.com/index.php

    and their forum for FALs (now they call it the FN files forum which covers all brands of FALs);

    http://www.falfiles.com/forums/forum...s=&forumid=150

    Good luck, they have become crazy expensive to plink with anymore.

    I'm not an expert... the experts hang out on the FALFILES.

    I have a DS Arms SA-58 carbine and I love it. It is heavy and expensive to shoot anymore. Ammo for this thing has tripled in the last two years and surplus is hard to find. I used to pay $20 for 140 round South African battle packs, now it's upwards of $60 when it's even available. Glad I have a bunch stashed away.

    It's not the most accurate rifle mostly because the sights (rear) aren't that great. But I can hit center of bad guy all day at 100-200-300 yards. Never had it on a range farther than that. It's not a .5 MOA shooter, but more of a battle rifle. You won't see any of these at Camp Perry.

    You can get a rail mount like have and put an optic on it.

    There are also aftermarket rear sights that are better than the standard.

    All in all it is a great shooter and for plinking it's fine. I wouldn't want to carry it and a full ammo load for very long though.

    Yes I know, that's where I used to get them for $20. I refuse to pay $60 for them. They never ran out of those battle packs, they (not just AIM) fabricated a shortage. Just like they did with .223 XM193. Now that .223 ammo is no longer unavailable when will the price for 500 rounds of XM193 go back to $99 where it was just a couple years ago? I'm not paying $229 for 500 rounds of .223 either.

    I've got plenty of .223 and .308 to last a long time. I'll buy more when the prices are better.

    Sorry didn't mean to direct my anger about inflated ammo prices at you...getting down off my soapbox now.

    How accurate are they?
    Most if not all EBR's and MBR's are more accurate than any of us can shoot them under field conditions.

    Can scopes be easily mounted to them?
    Yes. But that is only half the answer. There aren't any practical options for mounting optics on any 1950's era MBR that allows for co-witnessing of the iron sights because the stocks were designed with a "drop-at-comb" that was optimized for the plane of the iron sights. You'll need a "riser" of some sort on the buttstock to get a proper cheekweld.

    Best option is to get a mount that is VERY QD in case the optic fails. Regardless, you now have a buttstock with a riser that is detrimental to getting a proper cheekweld with the irons sights.

    If this rifle is "just for fun" then none of this matters.
