i found a small frame taurus revolver today. it is stainless steel , 2.25 or 2.50 barrel, has full under barrel lug like the ruger sp101 has. soft rubber grips , its in 38special. appears to be in j frame class. anybody have any idea what it could be and how good is this pistol.

Model 85, I have one in blue since 1989 no problems. I tend to shoot standrad velocity loads in any J frame size gun and stay away +Ps.

The couple times I shot an 85 I noticed they're a lot nicer with standard-pressure loads. The +Ps just didn't seem that pleasant, and even seemed hard to extract the empties from the cylinder afterwards.

I am in the market for a revolver. I have heard Taurus has a problem with dual action and the ones I have looked at had a real problem with the trigger pull. The single action was great.

I have never owned a revolver therefor I don't know much about them.

Is that something that can be fixed?
Is it really common with just Taurus?

Sounds like a Taurus 85. I've owned 5 or so over the last 20 years. I still own two.
Nice revolver and one of the best values in a self defense handgun.
    As far as Jim1911's comment:

Some of those 85's were a bit scratchy initially but smoothed out after a couple hundred rounds. You can dry fire the revolver to reduce ammo use during break in.
I do suggest putting about 200 rounds through any handgun before carrying it for self defense.

Double acttion revolvers have a heavier trigger in DA than do most auto pistols. This is a safety feature, and kind of comes with the mechanics of a revolver - your muscle power torns and moves a lot of stuff in order to set up the next shot, and cock the trigger and fire the piece.

As stated, they will smooth up with use, and you will get better at shooting it.

As dogngun said it will smooth up. One of the reasons I bought the Model 85 when I did was because I was impressed with the trigger compared to S&W J frames at the time. The sights were also better, bigger than old S&W J frames, smaller than the newer ones. I had been carrying S&Ws for about 15 years at the time so I was well acquainted with them.

I've had my 85ULSS for a few years now and have been very happy with it. I don't shoot +p loads in it, but I carry it loaded with +p Gold Dots.

+p loads are not a pleasure at the range, but they are exactly what you want if you need to defend yourself.
