Fired primer disposal question
Question for the reloading vets. Is there a proper way to dispose of fired primers? I've got quite a pile now and want to make sure it isn't illegal or ethically evil to dump them in the regular garbage for pickup.
Thanks,
G.

Re: Fired primer disposal question
I've been dumping mine in the trash since I started reloading. I don't know for certain, but I'm pretty sure there is no legal issue there. Nothing I read in all the books and manuals I studied when I started said anything that would lead me to believe it would be an issue.

Re: Fired primer disposal question
I just put them in the trash. Fire cleans them.

Re: Fired primer disposal question
Once they're fired they're just slightly burned chunks of metal. I just pitch mine in the trash.

I've been tossing them in the trash since I started reloading over 30 years ago.

Re: Fired primer disposal question
Thanks.
Gary, I haven't had to worry about that yet. I've only been reloading for a year now, so my bad brass is a very small pile at this point compared to my spent primer pile. I figured I'd take them to a recycler when the pile gets big enough. Right now the bad brass I have is in a bin with all the .22 brass I've swept up.

Re: Fired primer disposal question
If you are really goosy about getting rid of prmers and brass and not sure if all are fired, just get a steel barrel, build a good fire of newspaper and light wood in the bottom of it, put the questionable brass and primers in a grocery bag - double bag it, actually - and lower the bag into the fire. Anything not spent already will cook off, and after the fire is done, collect the now-sanitized brass and primer metal and take it to the recycler. It is just scrap brass, now.
With modern primers and powders, the residue is non-toxic, and even the most ardent "environmentalist" could hardly find fault with it.

Re: Fired primer disposal question
Not to change the subject too much, but I have some primed cases that I want to get rid of. I recently found a bunch at a range and the brass was not in good shape. I pulled the heads and properly disposed of the soggy powder. I was going to soak the primed cases in oil and then throw them out after draining the oil. Any opions?

Re: Fired primer disposal question
WD-40 will kill the live primers. As for spent ones I've just been throwing them in the trash.
